LIER, Belgium, Feb. 28, 2020–Spencer Wilton rode Super Nova II to victory in the CDI4* Grand Prix Friday in the first competition for the British partnership since the team bronze medal performance at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon. British riders filled three of the top four places in the starting lineup of 44 combinations from 14 nations.
Spencer and the 17-year-old British-bred Hanoverian gelding scored 75.761% for the win by one of the country’s top combinations that competed on the silver medal team at the 2016 Olympics as well as the World Games.
There were big disparities in the high and low judges’ marks–a high of 78.043% from Denmark’s 5* Susanne Baarup, one score above 77%, two above 76% and 70.109% from Holland’s Janine van Twist.
Erlentanz, ridden by Sonnar Murray Brown for the second time since Charlotte Dujardin competed the horse for most of 2019 after the rider was injured in a car crash, placed second on 74.174%. The result was a personal best for Sonnar and the 13-year-old Trakehner gelding.
Adelinde Cornelissen of the Netherlands on Aqiedo was third on 73.000%.
Great Britain’s Gareth Hughes on KK Woodstock placed fourth on a personal best 72.891%.
