OCALA, Florida, April 11, 2024–Adrienne Lyle rides Lars van de Hoenderheide to victory in World Equestrian Center CDI3* Grand Prix Thursday in just second competition for American partnership despite on-again, off-again interruptions from severe weather.

Adrienne and the 13-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding that arrived from the Netherlands to semi tropical South Florida less than three months ago scored 72.000% in three preparations to start over the course of three hours.

Lars, previously competed by world champion rider Charlotte “Lottie: Fry of Great Britain, is one of two horses, the other the 12-year-old KWPN gelding Helix, that were acquired by Heidi Humphries of Zen Elite Equestrian Center for Adrienne to compete. Helix will compete Friday as will Endel Ots on Zen Elite’s Bohemian.

In Thursday’s Grand Prix, Marcus Orlob and Jane, a 10-year-old KWPN mare that he took over riding from owner Alice Tarjan earlier this year, placed second on 69.913%.

Julio Mendoza Loor, who rides for Ecuador but lives in the U.S.,  was third on 68.913% the 13-year-old KWPN gelding Jewel’s Goldstrike.

This event, and a CDI4* in California this weekend are the second last two competitions for riders to qualify for a European tour during which the three riders for the U.S. team will be selected for the Paris Olympics.

Adrienne, who gave birth to her first child less than six months ago, said of scheduling qualifying competitions on short notice with new horses:

“It is a mental challenge for sure because it’s not like you would love to be able to ride them more times and practice more. But you know we have to be very careful that we preserve their mental and physical well-being above all. So it’s been more of a mental challenge to be thinking through how I want to approach things with them so that you can really take advantage of the schooling time that you have on them.”

She will compete Helix in the Grand Prix Friday to qualify for the Special and in the evening will ride Lars in the Freestyle for the first time, using the music from Wizard that she competed at the 2012 Olympics.

Correction: Lars van de Hoenderheide came from the Netherlands, Helix came from Sweden. An earlier version incorrectly gave Lars previous residence as Sweden.
