KRONENBERG, Netherlands, Dec. 1, 2023–Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour made a spectacular international debut on Mount St. John Freestyle with victory on a score of 81.196% in the CDI3* Grand Prix Friday.

The competition was Cathrine’s first at Big Tour in a year and 2 1/2 years since the Hanoverian mare Freestyle was last competed internationally by Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain.

All five judges awarded the Danish Olympic team rider and Freestyle, now 14 years old, scores above 80%, the highest of 82.717% by Olivier Smeets of Belgium.

Britain’s Charlotte “Lottie” Fry on the 12-year-old stallion Lars van de Hoenderheide was runner-up on 75.109%. The pair have competed at Big Tour for the past year.

Marlies van Baalen of the Netherlands on Habibi DVB, the 11-year-old KWPN gelding which the duo won this Grand Prix a year ago, were third on   73.913%.

Flore De Winne of Belgium and Flynn FRH, nine-year-old Hanoverian stallion, were fourth on 71.565%. Flore and Flynn were on Belgium’s team at the European Championships in September.

The 31-year old Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour last competed a year ago on Bohemian that was her Tokyo Olympic mount.

She first competed in pony classes, including the 2006 Europeans, before Cassidy, a Danish Warmblood, that was one of two horses she rode as a Junior. Cathrine and Cassidy ended up in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Her success on Cassidy that included the 2017 and 2019 Europeans led to Bohemian that she competed at the 2021 Europeans as well as the Tokyo Olympics.

On Vamos Amigos, Cathrine led Denmark to the world championship in 2022 and also earned two individual silver medals.

With the retirement of Cassidy and other riders taking over Bohemian and Vamos Amigos she had no Big Tour horse ahead of the Paris Olympics next summer.

The British-based Mount St. John stud arranged for Cathrine and Zinglersen ApS to take 50% stake in Freestyle.

Charlotte Dujardin had competed Freestyle, including leading Britain to team bronze at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon and the duo also earned individual bronze. The pair last competed 2 1/2 years ago.
