WAYNE, Illinois, Aug. 25, 2023–Olympic star Sabine Schut-Kery rode Gorgeous Latino to the Festival of Champions to victory in the seven-year-old Final Friday to win the national championship.
Sabine of San Marcos, California and the KWPN stallion were awarded 77.300% to claim the title. Sabine and Gorgeous Latino have been competing together since the beginning of last year and competed in the World Young Horse Championships for six year olds. The pair were third in the preliminary championship competition two days ago but the Final result gave the duo a title-winning total of 76.043%,
Sabine became an international star when she and Sanceo led the United States team to the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Ali Potasky of Versailles, Kentucky on the Dutch Warmblood gelding Lord Hennessey was reserve champion based on a victory in the preliminary test and a score of 74.600% in Final.
The married couple Rebecca Rigdon on Lionell VE and David Blake on Lion Heart, based in Encinitas, California, placed second and third, respectively, in the Final to stand third and fourth in the championship.
