STADL-PAURA, Austria, April 17, 2022–Canada’s Ryan Torkkeli rode Sternenwanderer to victory in the CDI4* Grand Prix Sunday with scores from this competition that put the pair at the top of the rankings for selection to his nation’s team for the world championships in four months.

Ryan and the 16-year-old Rhinelander gelding scored 71.426% in the first international competition in seven months for the partnership that is based in Germany and is coached by Dieter Laugks. The duo posted a personal best score of 70.826% for fourth place in the Grand Prix Saturday.

Austria’s Renate Voglsang on Fürst Ferdinand zur Fasanenhöhe was second on 70.575% with Delia Eggenberger of Switzerland on Fairtrade third on 70.064%.

The 40-year-old Ryan has been competing Sternenwanderer in international competition for the past year with a win at Deauville, France last July.

Canada’s world championship selection criteria calls for a team average of 70% in competitions from Jan. 1 through mid-June, with both Grand Prix and Special scores factored in.

Canadian riders Naïma Moreira Laliberté and Evi Strasser are in Europe following the Wellington winter circuit and are scheduled to compete later this week at the Horses & Dreams tournament in Hagen, Germany.
