MADRID, Nov. 27, 2021–Helen Langehanenberg and Annabelle captured the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday to rocket up the Western European League standings for a possible start at the Final next April.
The victory for the German team rider and the 13-year-old Holsteiner mare on a score of 80.500% was only the second for the partnership since the pair began Big Tour three years ago.
Helen and Annabelle, on Germany’s gold medal team at the European Championships three months ago, were the last combination in the lineup of 12 riders and horses.
At that point, Spain’s Olympic pair of Beatriz Ferrer Salat and Elegance was leading but ended as runner-up on 79.220%.
Juan Matute Guimon on Quantico–back in top form after the rider underwent life-saving surgery for a heart problem in 2020–placed third on 78.160%. The result was the second highest for the duo but the popularity of the 24-year-old rider was reflected in the spectator judging scores that put them at the top.
Juan, who rides for Spain but grew up with his family in Wellington, Florida and the 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding were second in the Grand Prix Friday.
Frederic Wandres and Bluetooth OLD were fourth on 77.230%, but the placing was enough to keep the German team rider at the top of the league standings for a start in the Final at Leipzig, Germany next April.
