CALEDON, Ontario, June 1, 2019–Two-time Olympian Belinda Trussell and Carlucci rode to their highest Pan American Games Prix St. Georges qualifying score at the Caledon CDI1* three weeks before Canada’s team is announced for the continental championships held once every four years.
Belinda and the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding scored 72.059% in the Prix St. Georges and 70.353% in the Intermediate 1.
Sara Hassler on Harmony’s Boitano won the Int. 1 on 70.735% for the first victory by the 23-year-old American rider who took over the ride in February.
The result for Belinda and Carlucci with an Int. 1 score earlier this year of 73.333% boosts the pair’s chances for a place on the team of mixed Small and Big Tour combinations for the Pan Ams in Lima, Peru at the end of July. Belinda competed for Canada at the 2004 and 2016 Olympics, at four World Equestrian Games and the 2015 Pan American Games where the team won silver.
Tina Busse-Irwin on Laurencio and Lindsay Kellock on Floratina at Small Tour and Jill Irving on Degas at Grand Prix–none of those combinations competed here –are at the top of the rankings for the Pan Ams that give Canada a chance to earn a team start at next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Two nations at Lima can get an invitation to Tokyo. The United States has already qualified with its silver medal performance at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games.
A qualifying CDI is scheduled for Canada in two weeks, ahead of the team announcement set for June 19.
