AACHEN, Germany, July 2, 2025–German Olympian Frederic Wandres rode Quizmaster FRH to victory Wednesday but the popular star of the CDI1* Prix St. Georges was American Kevin Kohmann on Scala riding at the premier World Equestrian Festival for the first time.

Frederic and Quizmaster, 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding that he has competed on both sides of the Atlantic for the  past five years, was awarded 73.912% for the win.

Kevin came into the arena on the 10-year-old Hanoverian mare Scala just as rain began falling to break days of stifling heat and plunging the temperature from 98F/36C to 63F/17C.

Near the end of the ride, lightning and a huge clap of thunder shoo the stadium but Kevin and Scala, co-owned with his mother-in-law’s Diamante Farms in Wellington, Florida, did not appear to flinch and continued to finish for a score of 69.706%. The competition was then halted to wait for the storm to pass.

However, as the pair began to leave the stadium spectators gave them a standing ovation.

Scala, Kevin said, did not give a darn about the thunder.

“Unfortunately, because of the rain, she wasn’t as good in a trot as we normally have her, but for my first time on my own horse in Aachen to get a standing ovation was also pretty cool.”

The duo scored 69.706% to place fifth.

Fellow American Marcus Orlob was not so fortunate competing the nine-year-old JJ Glory Day, a Danish stallion, for the first time in Europe.

The duo placed sixth on 69.294% with a spread of more than nine points between a high of 73.088% and a low of 63.971%.
