MECHELEN, Belgium, Dec. 28, 2024–Belgium’s Justin Verboomen rode the eight-year-old Zonik Plus to victory in the World Cup Grand Prix Saturday in the partnership’s second Big Tour event.
Justin and the black Hanoverian stallion were awarded 74.348% for the win just four weeks after their CDI Grand Prix debut. The pair competed when the horse was six at the World Young Horse Championships.
Fellow Belgian Larissa Pauluis on the 14-year-old KWPN gelding Flambeau, her Tokyo and Paris Olympic mount, was runner-up on 73.783%.
Germany’s Dorothee Schneider and Dayman, 12-year-old Westfalen gelding, placed third on 72.870%.
Mechelen is the sixth of 11 qualifiers in Western Europe for the annual championship.
The Freestyle is scheduled for Sunday to decide points toward the Final in Basel, Switzerland in April.
