AACHEN, Germany, July 6, 2024–Steffen Peters and Suppenkaser recovered from what he described as “a little bit difficult” Grand Prix, to place on the podium at the CDI4* Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night, an event that Ecuador’s Julio Mendoza Loor on Jewel’s Goldstrike.logged his first European victory.

Julio, based in North Carolina, and the 13-year-old KWPN gelding that have earned an individual start at the Paris Olympics late this month scored 78.920% for the win.

Sandra Sysojeva of Poland and the eight-year-old Oldenburg mare Maxima Bella were runner-up on 78.510%

The result for Steffen and “Mopsie,” as Suppenkasper is called in the barn, of 75.430% for third place was a big boost following an uncharacteristic 68.131% in the Grand Prix Wednesday.

Steffen who has been selected for the team for Paris that willl be his sixth Olympcs, said that Mopsie was “pretty excited”starting the musical performance.

But, he said, he “then settled down very quickly to the clean tests with wonderful piaffe/passage “and I feel really good about this because the Grand Prix was a little bit difficult.”

“For him to go in the freestyle in this atmosphere proves that he can handle this,’ he said of his mount on the U.S. silver medal teams at the Tokyo Olympics and 2018 World Equestrian Games.

“And now I’m looking forward to Paris and I will enjoy the team.”

He praised chef d’equipe Christina Traurig who he says has been helping him the past few weeks and will continue to do so in training camp.

His wife, Shannon; Akiko Yamazaki, the owner of his Olympic horses since the 2008 Games, and team members in Aachen who made the effort “really pay off.”
