OMAHA, Nebraska, April 5, 2023–Defending champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB won the World Cup Grand Prix Wednesday with Isabell Werth on DSP Quantaz runner-up and Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merrald on Blue Hors Zepter breaking up a German sweep of the top three places.

Jessica and the 16-year-old Trakehner mare scored 79.922% for the victory in seeking to defend  the title the Olympic and European championship gold medal partnership won in 2022 at Leipzig, Germany.

Isabell, who rode Weihegold to the title here in 2017, was riding DSP Quantaz on her return to the American Midwest, to score 77.485% for second place.

Nanna Skodborg Merrald of Denmark on Blue Hors Zepter was third on 76.165%.

Ingrid Klimke, the third of three Germans in the Final, placed fourth on Franziskus on 75.543%.

Dinja van Liere of the Netherlands withdrew Hermes from the competition after the world championship medalist had to present twice to the veterinary examination.

The Freestyle that will decide the annual championship is scheduled for Friday.

“Dalera was on fire,” Jessica said after the ride. “A little bit too much energy for today, but the good thing is we could all see she is in top form. I definitely enjoyed the ride. I already enjoyed the last days training her, because she felt amazing from the first trot step on. The first day I arrived she needed to buck a little bit, and obviously today she would have needed a buck before entering the arena as well. I will try that for Friday. Anyway she is in super form, and just as excited as I am, obviously, to be here.”

“I was very happy because it was not so easy after two days quarantine, and more of less 3 days off to start to bring him in shape for the Grand Prix,” Isabell said. “He has a strong temperament and is strong minded and he was a bit scared in the first familiarization with the noise, and so that was not so easy for him to become more focused.

“That was a bit day by day and it improved a bit, but I did not expect that it could work so good today. So I am totally happy that he was so focused. You could see, of course, he was still a little bit on fire, but he was very with me and very focused. It was not a lot of big mistakes, and I think it was a lot of highlights. At the end I am totally happy with the result and my ride and with him.”

Nanna Skodborg Merrald of Denmark on Blue Hors Zepter described herself as “super happy with Zepter. He felt really, really nice and supple and with a lot of energy in there.

“I tried to go for a little bit more power than I had done with the last couple of competitions, and it went well in a lot of exercises, but I had a few quite expensive mistakes. In total, I had a really good feeling with him. He was happy and really enjoying the atmosphere.”

Steffen Peters, one of three World Cup champion riders in the competition taking the title in 2009, described Suppenkasper, or Mopsie as her calls the horse, as “great.”

“Very energetic and, at the same time, relaxed for the walk tour,” he said. “Unfortunately, the right pirouette got a little big. It was not perfectly in the rider’s control. But overall a very good test, and to be fifth in this group is wonderful for our placing and for being the oldest rider here in this competition. After 50 years of being in the sport it’s still very exciting to be part of this, and I’m thrilled.”

Steffen is one of three World Cup champions in the competition. Jessica won the title on Dalera in 2022, Isabell Werth has won the World five times, including Omaha in 2017. Steffen won on Ravel at Las Vegas in 2009.
