WELLINGTON, Florida, Feb 24, 2023–Salvino will not go to the World Cup Final in Omaha after a lump was found on one of the horse’s legs Friday, Adrienne Lyle, the rider, reported.
Salvino, on American silver medal teams at the Olympics and World Equestrian Games, had only more chance to qualify for the Final, at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington next week. The partnership had to cancel their previous qualifier when Salvino suffered a colic.
“In an unfortunate turn of events, we announce that our World Cup bid has come to an end this season,” Adrienne said in a statement about the 16-year-old Hanoverian stallion that she has been competing at Big Tour for the past six years.
“Salvino has been feeling great in his training and we were entered and ready to go for next week’s CDI-W.
“However, when we took him out of his stall we noticed a lump on the inside of his leg that was not normally there. Upon veterinary evaluation it was discovered that he had popped a small splint.”
After consultation with owner Betsy Julian and U.S. team coach Debbie McDonald, she said, “we all agree that of course his welfare always comes first and he will not be pushed to do next week’s competition.
“Although a very minor injury it will need time to rest and recover and with only one World Cup qualifier left this season it simply wasn’t mean to be for us.”
“We will always treasure our memories of competing at the World Cup in Sweden in 20`9, and we wish all of our fellow US riders the best of luck in their last qualifying competition and on to the World Cup! It will be a very special event this year, having it on our home soil.”
Steffen Peters of San Diego, California on Suppenkasper has already clinched one of three places awarded to North America to start in Omaha.
Alice Tarjan of Oldwick, New Jersey also is considered definite on the American-bred Serenade MF.
Sarah Tubman of Wellington on First Apple is battling for the third spot.
Anna Buffini has flown from her home in San Diego to compete Davinia la Douce in Wellington also seeking to fill the third slot.
