The 2022 Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida over winter will upgrade to an historic six CDI4* competitions in addition to the top rated CDI5*, a Nations Cup and three World Cup qualifiers. Equestrian Sport Productions describe the move as a way to spread prize money and provide opportunities for competitors to earn more world ranking points.
The six CDI4* that earn competitors bonus points is a huge increase since the first regularly scheduled competition at this level, one at Wellington’s GDF in 2014 and for each year through 2020. There were two in Wellington and one at Tryon International Equestrian Center in 2021.
CDI4* competitions will upgrade most of what were 3*-level events in previous years with a small increase in overall prize money, according to ESP.
The most CDI4* in the U.S. in any year was 2016 when events were held at Wellington, New York’s Central Park Horse Show and at Omaha as a test event for the World Cup Final the following year.
