MANNHEIM, Germany, April 28, 2021–Isabell Werth rode Weihegold OLD to victory in the Maimarket Turnier CDI4* Grand Prix Wednesday just hours after the most decorated Olympian in history returned Bella Rose to Big Tour competition with a win.
Isabell and Weihegold, a 16-year-old Oldenburg mare, scored 81.674% for the win in the Grand Prix for the Freestyle, the highest score in 21 Big Tour events so far in 2021, now in the second year of the coronavirus pandemic and a recent equine herpes virus outbreak.
The duo led a German sweep of the top five places, with Matthias Bouten on Meggle’s Boston second on 72.022% and Anja Plönzke on Tannenhof’s Fahrenheit third on 71.130%.
Isabell and Weihegold, No. 2 in the world behind only Isabell on Bella Rose, competed twice since Covid-19 lockdowns, in July last year and January this year.
The duo won team gold at the 2016 Olympics, swept the 2017 European Championships and won three straight World Cup Finals, equal to the record. Opportunities to set a record at the World Cup have been stymied by coronavirus that led to the 2020 and 2021 Finals being canceled.
