BUDAPEST, Aug. 6, 2020–Most of Spain’s children and junior team riders pulled out of the European Youth Championships Thursday when Hungary designated Spain a coronavirus risk requiring quarantine although the equestrian competition was exempted.

The issue caused confusion for a while after the eight riders arrived in Hungary for the championships that were already significantly reduced by the absence of teams from Great Britain, Norway and Sweden.

One Spanish rider remained for the children’s division and two for the juniors that are scheduled for next week. Young rider and under-25 divisions are set for the following week.

The Spanish equestrian federation confirmed the situation in which Hungary named Spain as one of the countries requiring a 14-day quarantine. However, organizers of the event had obtained a special permit that allowed participants to avoid quarantine.

A truck carrying five of the Spanish horses turned around in Italy and went back home.
