STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 15, 2019–Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD won the World Cup Grand Prix Friday in the first competition by the world’s No. 2 partnership seeking to qualify for the Final in Las Vegas next April to try for a fourth straight title.
Isabell and the 14-year-old Oldenburg mare were awarded 81.565% for the win, the seventh Grand Prix in a row with a score above 80% for the combination that also won team gold at the 2016 Olympics.
This was the first of two qualifiers the German superstar and Weihegold that won the World Cup in 2017 at Omaha, 2018 in Paris and in Gothenburg, Sweden earlier this year need to complete to go to Las Vegas.
Team mate Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSF Dalera BB placed second on a personal best 79.848%. Their previous high Grand Prix result was 79.217% at Geneva a year ago. The duo were on the German gold medal team at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games and the European Championships in September where the pair also took Freestyle bronze.
Dorothee Schneider and Sammy Davis Jr. were third on 77.761% while Benjamin Werndl and Daily Mirror scored 75.717% for fourth place.
The Freestyle to decide points in the third of 11 qualifiers in Western Europe is scheduled for Saturday.
