HERNING, Denmark, Oct. 19, 2019–Cathrine Dufour rode Bohemian to a score of 83.022% to win the World Cup Grand Prix Saturday for a smashing launch of the Western European circuit leading to the final in Las Vegas next April.

The score for the Danish rider on Bohemian, a nine-year-old Westfalen gelding in the second year at Big Tour, was second so far this year only to Isabell Werth on Bella Rose who posted 85.652% in the European Championship Grand Prix two months ago.

The crowd burst into spontaneous clapping as the duo rode the final centerline that caused Bohemian to spook but quickly brought back by Cathrine.

“The atmosphere is so cool in there and he has to learn it,” Cathrine said after the ride that received a standing ovation. “So thanks to the audience, it wasn’t their fault he reacted in that way. I’m glad the audience is so enthusiastic.”

Germany’s Benjamin Werndl on Daily Mirror, that competed at the rider’s first final in Gothenburg, Sweden in April, posted a personal best 77.239% to place second.

Helen Langehanenberg, the 2013 World Cup champion on Damon Hill, rode Damsey FRH to third place on 75.761%.

The result for the 27-year-old Cathrine placed her in elite company with two horses to breach the 80% mark at Grand Prix, the other her Cassidy that she developed from European Junior Championships to the 2016 Olympics and medalist in Europeans in 2017 and 2019.

Only Isabell Werth has ridden three horses into the 80% club, with Bella Rose, Weihegold OLD and Emilio. Edward Gal achieved the scores with Totilas and Glock’s Undercover and Charlotte Dujardin did so with Valegro and Mount St. John Freestyle.

Cathrine, 27 years old, has not competed at a World Cup Final.

The Grand Prix Freestyle to decide points is set for Sunday as the first of 11 qualifiers in the Western European League leading to Las Vegas. Central Europe and the Pacific are winding down while North America has another five qualifying events, four at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida, on the calendar.
