GEESTEREN, Netherlands, June 22, 2019–Edward Gal on Glock’s Zonik held off strong performances by Sweden’s Juliette Ramel on Buriel K.H. and Therese Nilshagen on Dante Weltino OLD to give the Netherlands the lead midway through the CDIO3* Nations Cup.
Both Edward and Zonik, 11-year-old Danish Warmblood stallion, on 78.304% and Juliette on Buriel, 13-year-old KWPN gelding, on 78.000% were personal best scores in the Grand Prix that is the first stage of the competition in which six nations are taking part.
Standings after the Grand Prix determined by individual placings of three of the combinations in each team were: 1. Netherlands 11 points; 2. Sweden 13; 3. Great Britain 30; 4. USA 43; 5. France 45; 6. Belgium 54.
The Grand Prix Special and the Freestyle, both scheduled for Sunday, will decide this Nations Cup, the fourth in a lineup of eight trans-Atlantic team events this year. Sweden leads the series with the USA and Great Britain tied for second after the first three shows.
Edward and Zonik are starting their third year at Big Tour and rode for Holland at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon as well as the World Cup Final in Paris the same year.
Juliette and Buriel were on Sweden’s team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and last year’s Tryon WEG. Therese Nilshagen and Dante Weltino were team mates at Tryon and led her nation to team bronze at the 2017 European Championships.
All four Dutch combinations–though only three placings count–placed in the top eight, and the four Swedes in the top 10.
Great Britain’s leading pair was Charlotte Fry on Dark Legend that scored 74.413% to place fifth individually.
Charlotte Jorst on Kastel’s Nintendo was the top American pair on 71.717% for 11th.
Nick Wagman and Don John, 11-year-old KWPN gelding, competing on their first USA team tour of Europe, also posted a personal best score of 70.478% to place 13th individually.
