WINDSOR, England, May 9, 2019–Charlotte Dujardin on Erlentanz was the dominating winner of the CDI4* Grand Prix Thursday but a highlight of the Royal Windsor Horse Show was Queen Elizabeth II visiting with Valegro, Charlotte and Carl Hester.

The queen, at 93 years of age and the longest reigning British monarch, clearly enjoyed the meeting with “Blueberry” at her castle 22 miles/33km from London where the show is being staged.

“There have been so many special moments with this horse,” Charlotte wrote on her Facebook page after the visit, “and then there is this. What an honor and a complete privilege…”

Charlotte, winner of gold at both London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics on Valegro now 17 years old, was competing Erlentanz in only the second CDI for the pair and posting their first victory.

Charlotte and the 12-year-old Trakehner gelding scored 78.087% for the win, less than two months after the pair’s debut CDI in England. Erlentanz is owned and previously competed internationally by Sonnar Murray Brown of Great Britain.

Carl Hester on Nip Tuck, his 2016 Olympic mount, placed second on 74.304%. This was the second CDI back for Carl and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding that competed at the 2014 World Equestrian Games and the 2015 and 2017 European Championships, the 2017 World Cup Final in Omaha as well as the Olympics before a 20-month break.

Richard Davison on Bubblingh was third on 72.978% to complete a British sweep of the top three places.

Carl made it clear he will campaign for a place on Great Britain’s team for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo that will be the sixth Games for the rider, who will be 53 years old at the time, most likely with Hawtins Delicato that he rode at the 2018 Tryon World Equestrian Games for team bronze.

“I said ‘never again’ after both London and Rio, as you do, but it’s all about being prepared for that commitment for four years leading up to a Games. You do them one at a time and I am aiming for next year. A sixth Games would be great,” he told the Metro newspaper.

Asked how much longer he expects to compete, Carl replied: “Who knows? There are people in equestrian older than me. On my own it would be hard to keep my motivation up, so I’m lucky to have Charlotte Dujardin with me and she is fantastic. She was very young when she came to work with me–we’re now 12 years and several Olympics later.

“We are very different. She gives me a kick up the a** and I calm her down! We’re opposites and that’s why it works.”
