LONDON, Dec. 18, 2018–Frederic Wandres on Duke of Britain produced a Big Tour career high score performance to win the World Grand Prix Freestyle Tuesday, the first German to capture the premier British event since the annual championship series was begun at Olympia 16 years ago.

In his first appearance in what he described as a breath-taking arena before at least 5,000 spectators, Frederic and the 11-year-old British-bred Hanoverian gelding were awarded 80.030 per cent, to match the same score for hometown favorite Charlotte Dujardin on Hawtins Delicato, the tie broken by the artistic score.

The 2016 World Cup champion Hans Peter Minderhoud of Holland on Glock’s Dream Boy was third on 77.990 per cent, a day after winning the debut “short” format Grand Prix.

“Christmas is done for me,” the 31-year-old Frederic joked after the competition.

From his arrival at Olympia on Saturday, he said, everyone had been friendly.

“It has been really unbelievable. It’s the best show I’ve ever been to. Amazing. Super.”

“For me to reach the magical 80 per cent is a dream come true especially in the company of these riders,” he said. “I trust Duke totally–I could ride him in any arena anywhere and as long as I don’t make a mistake, he won’t make a mistake.”

Charlotte, who rode Carl Hester’s World Equestrian Games mount Hawtins Delicato as, she reported, Mount St. John Freestyle that she rode in the WEG was laid up with a respiratory virus.

Charlotte and “Del” performed the freestyle to Valegro’s 2011 music. The degree of difficulty was not as great as tht of Duke of Britain, though the technical marks for Britain’s most successful rider were higher.

Although their performance in the “short” Grand Prix was “a bit sticky,” the pair were more ready for what was only the second freestyle for the horse nicknamed, Del, aged 10 and also a British-bred Hanoverian.

To ride in this arena with an electric atmosphere was “a big ask.”

Duke of Britain (Dimaggio x Rubinstein) was bred near Windsor by Tony and Sarah Pidgley. Hof Kasselmann of Hagen, Germany bought the “Duke” in 2011 then sold him at the Performance Sales International auction to Germany’s Victoria Michalke. She competed the horse as a six-year-old in the World Young Horse Championships in 2013, placing fourth. Kasselmann bought the horse back four years ago.

Frederic, a full-time employee there for 10 years, began competing the horse at CDIs in April this year and through the summer the pair were on two German Nations Cup teams.

This was the sixth of 11 Western European League qualifiers for the Final in Gothenburg, Sweden next April.

The victory for Frederic moved him up to third place on 50 points behind fellow Germans Benjamin Werndl and Dorothee Schneider tied on 65 points.

The next WEL event is at Mechelen, Belgium at the end of this month.
