DONAUESCHINGEN, Germany, Aug. 19, 2018–Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo recovered from a shaky Grand Prix to post a personal best score for a smashing victory over Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD in the CDI4* Grand Prix Special Sunday and pretty much assured the pair a start at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon next month.
Sönke and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding were awarded 84.632 per cent for their pair’s first ever Big Tour victory over the world’s No. 1 combination and Olympic and European Championship gold medal team mates.
Isabell and Weihegold were awarded 81.745 per cent with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Zaire-E third on 77.383 per cent after the second place finish in Saturday’s Grand Prix.
“He was completely with me,” said a relieved Sönke, “that was a very good feeling.”
Isabell said that Weihegold “ran out of gas” in the Special after the winning the Grand Prix a day earlier that was the first competition for the the duo since repeating as World Cup champion in April.
The German dressage committee will decide in the next eight days on the team for Tryon, after Helen Langehanenberg rides Damsey in Münster next weekend.
The performances this weekend for Sönke and Cosmo were vital for selection to the German team for WEG in North Carolina next month. A minor injury to Cosmo had kept the 23-year-old rider and the horse he has competed since Young Riders from the Nations Cup at Aachen, Germany last month.
In the Grand Prix Saturday, the first competition since becoming German champions in June, Sönke and Cosmo scored 76.196 per cent for third place behind Isabell and Weihegold and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on Zaire-E.
The ride by Isabell and Weihegold was awarded the highest Grand Prix score of any of her Big tour horses–Bella Rose, Emilio and Don Johnson as well as Weihegold–in the past year.
Sunday’s results put the top prospects for the German team as Isabell on one of her three mounts; Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey FRH, Dorothee Schneider on Sammy Davis Jr. and Sönke and Cosmo. Helen wanted the extra competition, a national show, for more preparation after a baby break and their successful return at Aachen last month.
The Tryon World Games team competition will be decided by the Grand Prix over two days, Sept. 12 and 13. Individual medals will be awarded for the Grand Prix Special on Sept. 14 and for the Freestyle Sept. 16.
