HICKSTEAD, England, July 28, 2018–France took the lead in the Nations Cup series finale after the CDIO3* Grand Prix Special Saturday with the standings of the four teams to be decided Sunday by the Freestyle.
In the hard-to-follow format that is decided by adding up placings in the three Grand Prix level competitions with the lowest total winning, the top three placings in the Grand Prix and the top three from a combined Special and Freeatyle count.
France, Portugal and Sweden each had two combinations counting in the Special that officially placed them first on 26 points, second on 29 and third on 32, respectively.
Great Britain that was down to one pair, Louise Anne Bell on Into the Blue, when Fiona Bigwood and Kjaerholms Abutsiaq withdrew, was ranked in fourth place with 20 points.
The four teams each have two combinations in Sunday’s freestyle.
However, the trans-Atlantic series of seven Nations Cups was decided after five competition when Sweden took an unassailable lead to become champions for the second year in a row.
The current scoring format was implemented under pressure from the Netherlands after the 2017 series when the United States beat Holland in Rotterdam. However, the traditional format of the total of the top three scores in the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special was maintained instead of the new system for the CDIO5* Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany last week.
