HICKSTEAD, England, July 19, 2015–Carl Hester completed a double victory in the debut show for Wanadoo by taking the Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday, but Denmark claimed the CDIO3* Nations Cup for the second year in a row.
Germany did not compete here but had an insurmountable lead in the trans-Atlantic series to top the leaderboard of six events for the first time since its creation three years ago.
Great Britain’s 2012 Olympic team gold medal rider who has added the 14-year-old Hanoverian stallion to his string of world class mounts scored 76.975 per cent in the Freestyle, two days after capturing the Grand Prix in the pair’s first international Big Tour outing. In the past two years, he has competed Nip Tuck, Dances With Wolves, Fine Time and Uthopia as well as training Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro that is a part owner.
Anders Dahl on Wie Atlantico was second individually on 74.850 per cent to lead the Danish team to victory as he did at this same event a year ago which was Denmark’s first ever Nations Cup title. This was their second.
Sweden’s Malin Hamilton on Fleetwood placed third on 73.075 per cent.
Anders was the only member of today’s Danish team who was also on the 2014 winning side.
“Last year was the first time we had a team in the Nations Cup here at Hickstead and we won–it’s great to win it two years running,” said the 39-year-old who is married to British dressage rider Fiona Bigwood and lives a short distance from the Hickstead showgrounds.
“I thought from the start we had a chance, we had good horses and riders and Sidsel (Johansen) went really well all week, winning the Special and third in the Grand Prix. I was also super-happy with Atlantico who was second in the Grand Prix behind Carl, and again today in the Freestyle. This is one of the biggest achievements of his career but we’ve enjoyed a great year in 2015. He was great in Doha where we finished third behind Patrik Kittel and Carl.”
Final standings of the Hickstead Nations Cup of three phases–Grand Prix, Special and Freestyle–1. Denmark 422.049; 2. Great Britain 418.690; 3. Sweden 416.796; 4. South Africa 595.014.
Germany which fielded teams in the sole American Nations Cup in Wellington, Florida as well as Europe, was the series champion with 39 points .
The Netherlands that won both previous annual titles, was tied with Sweden in 35 points for second place, the United States fourth on 27, Denmark fifth on 23, Great Britain sixth on 18, Russia seventh on 14, France eighth 12, Spain ninth on 11, Belgium 10th on 9, Canada 11th 8, Switzerland 12th 7, Italy and South Africa tied at 13th on 6.
The series is still labeled by the Interntional Equestrian Federation (FEI) as a “test” and three different formats have been implemented–mixed Big and Small Tour teams in Florida, Grand Prix only and a mix of Grand Prix, Special and Freestyle results applied here that have led to calls to harmonize the format.
