GLADSTONE, New Jersey, June 13, 2014–The Grand Prix Special that will be pivotal in deciding the United States Championship presented by The Dutta Corp. and selection of a group of riders and horses to go to Europe looking to be on the team for the World Equestrian Games will be held Saturday.
The Special comes after the much-discussed Grand Prix in which the first and third placed riders were unhappy with their performances and three under 30-year-old woman defied atsronomical odds to get the same score to tie for fourth.
The 16 Grand Prix combinations had a scheduled day off Friday, but the Intermediate Championship lineup was just starting when a torrential rain storm led to the class being moved to Saturday.
The Grand Prix counted for 45 per cent of the total championship score and the Special will count for 40 per cent. The Freestyle scheduled for Sunday will make up the remaining 15 per cent.
The top eight pairs will fly to Europe next Wednesday to compete at the Fritzens, Austria CDI4* event July Fourth weekend then two weeks later at the World Equestrian Festival CDIO5* Nations Cup and CDI4* at Aachen, Germany. The American team will then be selected for the WEG in Normandy, France at the end of August.
