STUTTGART, Germany, Nov. 16–Helen Langehanenberg rode Damon Hill NRW to victory in the German Masters Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday with a lifetime personal best score of 89.775 per cent in the first step of her campaign to defend the World Cup title the German pair won seven months ago.

The performance by Helen and the 13-year-old Westfalen stallion (Donnerhall x Rubenstein I), Germany’s top ranked partnership at No. 2 in the world, was the second German Masters title in a row and surpassed their previous best result of 88.286 per cent the pair posted in claiming the World Cup in Sweden in April.

“I had the best feeling ever riding him,” Helen said after the event which was he first of two qualifiers she needs to get an automatic entry to the Final in Lyon, France next April as the title defender. “The horse gave me the feeling, he will do everything for me.”

Some of the loudest cheers were showered on Isabell Werth who rode El Santo NRW, the horse at the center of a six-month suspension the rider has appealed, to second place on 83.125 per cent. It was their second best Freestyle result, behind 84.050 per cent posted at Munich in May, 2012.

Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfvén and Don Auriello were third on 83.325 per cent.

“I’m really pleased with him, he has developed and matured a lot more and now I can take the power that he shows in the warm-up into the arena with me.” Tinne said. “He’s so self-assured now, and loves the audience and the atmosphere. That makes a big difference to the kind of performances you can produce.”

Tinne plans to compete at the next leg of the World Cup circut near her home in Stockholm.

After that, Don Auriello will spend winter in Florida where Tinne made the Grand Prix debut of the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding almost three years ago and since then have competed at the Olympics, European Championships and two World Cup Finals.

“We will go to the U.S. just before Christmas,” she said. “It will be much nicer for him than a cold winter in Stockholm.”

The results vaulted Isabell into second place in the West European League standings with 35 points–she was awarded the 20 points for first because the title defender gets no points–and two points behind Switzerland’s Marcella Krinke Susmelj who had earned points in the Central European League. Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfvén was in third place on 34 points.

This premier German indoor event, hosting the second of eight West European League qualifiers for the Final in Lyon, France next April, also saw other personal best results, including two 20-something German riders.

Fabienne Lütkemeier, aged 24, and D’Agostino logged their personal best of 78.400 for fourth place and 27-year-old Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, who married in the summer, also posted a personal best score on Unee BB of 76.225 per cent for seventh place.
