AACHEN, Germany, June 26–Austrian Olympian Victoria Max-Theurer rode Della Cavalleria OLD to victory in the Prix St. Georges Wednesday while 24-year-old American Caroline Roffman and Her Highness O competing for the first time at the World Equestrian Festival CHIO placed seventh on a second best ever score of 71.026 per cent.
Caroline of Wellington, Florida held back tears of relief until she made it out of the Deutsche Bank dressage arena, saying that despite her best efforts to treat it as just another horse show she found the experience “terrifying” and “overwhelming.”
Vici Max-Theurer and the 10-year-old mare (Diamond Hit x Rubinstein) scored 74.421 per cent for the win with Swedish Olympian Patrik Kittel and the home-bred Deja second on 74.368 per cent and German superstar Isabell Werth and Lezard 12 in third on 74.053. The top eight places were above 70 per cent.
Caroline and the 10-year-old Hanoverian mare (Hohenstein x Welmeyer) was a broodmare in a field just 2 1/2 years ago, were the first ride in the class which was also the first event on the 2013 dressage schedule at the world’s foremost horse show.
In an otherwise well ridden test, the pair made a costly mistake in the three-tempi changes.
Caroline, who will ride Sagacious as the first American combination ever to compete in the highly competitive Under-25 Division, said of competing in the imposing stadium, “I didn’t know I could be that scared. It was terrifying. The warmup, thousands of people in the stands.
“After the ride I was shaking. I’m usually so calm. But it was overwhelming. I was a blubbering, shuddering mass after.
“You can’t reproduce it to practise for it. There’s no show like it anywhere. It’s awesome.
“The best part was that the horse went in and did what she could do.
“Now, it’s over I wouldn’t change anything. ”
