Todd Flettrich has a new ride, the German gelding Revolverheld, that he hopes will be a successor to Otto, the horse he rode on the United States team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games and was retired last year.
The 11-year-old dark bay gelding (Rubin Royal x Atossa x Atatuerk) will be based at Margaret Duprey’s Cherry Knoll Farm in Wellington, Florida. Cherry Knoll is the owner of Revolverheld and Otto as well as Cedric ridden by Laura Kraut on the 2008 United States Olympic gold medal jumper team.
Todd, aged 41, did not discuss plans for the new mount. He trains with Oded Shimoni.
Revolverheld–the English translation is “gunslinger” and is likely to have a name change–was competed in Germany through Prix St. Georges and Intermediate 1 and is performing all the Grand Prix movements. See video here.
As a Young Rider, Todd twice won the championship at Dressage at Devon in Pennsylvania.
He competed Amadeus at Grand Prix including in Germany in 2007.
In 2009 he took over the ride on Otto, a Danish Warmblood gelding, competing in Florida and other shows on the East Coast of the United States and in Europe, including at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany.
The pair were on the team that secured a berth for the United States at the 2012 Olympics in London.
In the 2012 U.S. Olympic selection trials, Todd and Otto were the first reserve for the team to compete in London.
However, Margaret and he chose not to put the horse through the transatlantic round trip, giving up the reserve slot and retiring Otto.
