LYON, France, Oct. 28–Isabell Werth rode Warum Nicht FRH to victory in the Grand Prix of the Equitá Horse Show World Cup qualifier Thursday, with fellow German Ulla Salzgeber on Herzruf’s Erbe in second place and the only other combination to finish above 70 per cent.
Fresh from a win aboard her Olympic mount Satchmo at Odense, Denmark in last week’s opening competition in the West European League World Cup series, Isabell and the 14-year-old gelding on whom she competed at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky and won the 2007 World Cup scored 72.936 per cent. Ulla and Herzruf’s Erbe, only lightly competed in 2010 after an injury last year, was second on 72.085 per cent and Spain’s Beatriz Ferrer-Salat on Faberge in third place on 69.617 per cent.
Fifteen riders from nine nations started in the Grand Prix to qualify for Friday night’s Grand Prix Freestyle and its qualifying points on the way to the World Cup Final in Leipzig, Germany at the end of April.
Isabell said that her mount was a little distracted by the environment.
“It’s his first go after the WEG and I haven’t really prepared him for this indoor event, where the indications are not the same as outdoor,” she said. “I had to restrain him from jumping the fence and in the end, I am rather satisfied with this result.”
Asked about Totilas sold to Paul Schockemöhle of Performance Sales International of Germany after the WEG where Dutch rider Edward Gal won three gold medals, Isabell said:
“To ride a horse that was made by someone else is not really something I am looking for. The satisfaction of this sport is to reach a high level with a horse that you discovered, you worked with and shaped for a high level.
“I certainly felt sorrow for Edward. I couldn’t stand being separated from Gigolo, the horse of my best years and I am very lucky as something like that could not happen with Madeleine Winter-Schulze and Brigitte Werth, the owners of my horses.
“This selling of Totilas is part of our sport; for Paul Schockemöhle it’s a great advertisement for his stud and the offer of stallions.
“But riding Totilas is no warrant for a gold medal at the next Olympics. The comprehension between the rider and his horse has to be right–it’s very possible that the chemistry between them does not work, and our sport is a couple’s business.
“And, of course, many things can still happen on the way towards London: Just remember the misfortune of Adelinde Cornelissen in Lexington.”
She was referring to Jerich Parzival biting his tongue and drawing blood after the start of the Grand Prix at WEG that led to automatic disqualification.
The German-based Catherine Haddad of the U.S. who rode Winyamaro to 6th place place with a score of 66.936 per cent on Thursday, is atop the early standings for the West European League standings after gaining points with a win at Devon, Pennsylvania, in September and a 4th place at Lipica, Slovakia.
