SAUGERTIES, New York, Sept. 12–McLain Ward and his two-time Olympic gold medal mare, Sapphire, won the inaugural Pfizer Million Sunday, one year to the day since the pair won the million dollar Canadian Spruce Meadows Masters Grand Prix in Calgary.
McLain of Brewster, New York, and the 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare went clear in the jumpoff to capture first place in the event that event organizer, HITS, said was the richest purse in show jumping.
McLain and Sapphire, owned by McLain, Tom Grossman and Blue Chip Bloodstock won team gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Games.
The pair now head to the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky. At the previous WEG in Aachen, Germany, they were members of the U.S. team that won silver.
Forty-five combinations qualified for the Pfizer Million, including former World Cup champions Mario Deslauriers on Urico who will be a team mate of McLain at WEG, and Candice King and Skara Glen’s Davos, who is a reserve at Kentucky.
