Devon Kane rode Vamos to a personal best score to claim victory in the TerraNova World Cup Freestyle Saturday and take over the lead from her husband, Kevin Kohmann, in the North American standings after two of 10 qualifiers for the champinship Final.
Devon and the 14-year-old Westfalen gelding, owned by her family’s Diamante Farms in Wellington, Florida were awarded 75.505% for the win on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The win came a day after the Grand Prix also on a personal best.
The victory to earn 20 points adds to 10 won at Devon, Pennsylvania last month and drops her husband to second place in the North American standings with the 20 points he won at Devon. However, he is entered for next week’s World Cup qualifier in Mexico City.
The TerraNova success also boosted Devon and Vamos to third in the U.S. Open standings behind Kevin in first place and Canada’s Brittany Fraser-Beaulieu third. Ashley Holzer, also based in Welington, stands fourth. TerraNova was the last qualifier ahead of the final scheduled for Thermal, California next month.
Christian Simonson on Fleau de Baian, the 16-year-old Dutch-bred stallion he competed on the American team at the World Championships in Aachen, Germany in August, was runner-up Saturday on 73.670%.
Christian, also based in Wellington, was reserve champion on Indian Rock at the World Cup Final in Texas in April. His results at TerraNova moved him to fifth place in the U.S. Open standings.
James Koford on Fire Fly, the 16-year-old KWPN gelding he took over from Anna Marek a year ago, placed third on 72.910% in Saturday’s Freestyle.
World Cup qualifiers are in Mexico and Canada before returning to the U.S. to decide the three North Americans that will be invited to the championship Final scheduled for Gothenburg, Sweden at the end of March.
