Carl Hester on Fame, his Olympic and European medal mount, won the Wellington Heckfield CDI3* Friday on the second highest Grand Prix score in the three years of the partnership.
Carl and the 16-year-old Dutch-bred stallion scored 78.261%, just 0.279% below the best Grand Prix result for the pair set at the European Championships in Germany in 2023.
Fiona Bigwood and her home-bred 10-year-old mare Donna Bella was runner-up on 74.609% that was the best score for the duo in 11 months at Big Tour. Fiona is also the majority owner of Fame that she competed before turning over the ride to Carl three years ago.
Charlotte Dujardin and Brave Heart, 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding, placed third on 71.870%.
This event is the second last on the international dressage schedule in Britain–the last is at Hartpury, England at the end of this month–before the World Championships in Aachen, Germany in mid-August. There are, however, three Nations Cup competitions on the Continent by mid-July.
The team medals at Aachen will be decided by the top three scores for each nation in the Grand Prix.
British team mates Charlotte “Lottie” Fry based in the Netherlands and Becky Moody giving a break for Jagerbomb after claiming the World Cup title in Fort Worth, Texas in April are not competing here.
