Qualifying results for the $250,000 US Open decided by placings is displaying enormous differences in scores with just four of 25 shows remaining ahead of the final in Thermal, California Nov. 12-16.

Differences are reflected in two riders tied for second place with 86 points–one with five scores averaging 71.332 and the other with 66.934 from six results, as calculated by dressage-news.com. Two riders both with four results are tied for eighth place with 64 points–one with an average of 76.532 and the other with 70.471.

Three-time Olympian Adrienne Lyle who competed in this year’s World Cup Final that took her out of much of qualifying during the Florida winter circuit has the highest average score, 79.401, from three events to earn 57 points and stand 12th.

Kevin Kohmann with an identical situation including an appearance at the World Cup Final has an average of 77.916 from three events for a total of 52 points.

Anna Marek remains atop the standings with 105 points from the maximum of six scores that count, and an average of 77.125. She is the only rider with more than 100 points.

The top 18 combinations qualify for the CDI5* Final in Thermal, California Nov. 12-26.

The qualifying format that starts with 20 for a win was basically copied from the World Cup system. The North American league World Cup system initially had two scoring systems depending on the number of starting combinations but that was scrapped and there are no restrictions.

Of the four remaining competitions, the next is at Sherwood, Oregon later this week.

The final three are Devon, Pennsylvania Sept. 23; TerraNova, Myakka City, Florida Oct. 16, and Tryon North Carolina Oct. 23.
