Anna Buffini explained that the elimination from the Del Mar CDI3* Grand Prix Saturday was “a soundness concern” of Fiontini, her 15-year-old Danish Warmblood mare.
“Fio,” as she calls Fiontini, “and I were unfortunately eliminated from the Grand Prix due to a soundness concern,” she said in explanation after the competition.
“Fio’s health and well-being are my top priority—always. She’s an incredible partner who gives me her heart every time we compete, and I would never enter the ring if I didn’t believe she was 100%.
“While she didn’t feel off during the test, after reviewing the video, it’s clear the judges made the right call—and I fully respect and appreciate their decision.
“We’ll be working closely with our veterinary team to assess everything thoroughly and ensure she receives the best possible care.”
Fiontini was world champion at five, six and seven years of age when owned by Andreas Helgstrand and ridden by Spain’s Severo Jurado Lopez.
Anna, based at Rancho Santa Fe near Del Mar, first competed Fiontini 14 months ago. The pair started twice in CDIs and won both this year.
