Prize money for the dressage Word Cup Final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is boosted to €400,000 (US$444,700) from the original purse of €300,000 while the World Cup jumping final is doubled to €2.6 million (US$2,890,000).

The historic levels of prize money were announced Wednesday by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) for the dual annual championships in Saudi Arabia April 16-20.

Saudi Arabia has become significant in show jumping in the past quarter century–taking individual bronze at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and team bronze at the London Games in 2012.

For dressage, Jessica von Bredow -Werndl, the World Cup champion on TSF Dalera BB the past two years, has already announced she will not compete at Riyadh because of the distance from her home in Germany. Steffen Peters of the United States, champion in 2009,  has also declared he won’t go because he wants to focus on the Paris Olympics this summer.

Saudi Arabia has parlayed its oil wealth to emerge as a major player in some international sports in recent years, including golf.
