AACHEN, Germany, July 1, 2023–Jessica von Bredow-Werndl rode TSF Dalera BB to victory in the CDIO5* Grand Prix Special Saturday to lead Germany to the Nations Cup title at the World Equestrian Festival.

Jessica and the 16-year-old Trakehner mare, No. 1 horse and rider in the world, scored 81.021%, one of three combinations with Grand Prix Special results above 80%.

Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin on the 10-year-old gelding Imhotep placed second individually on 80.878% with her team taking bronze.

Nanna Skodborg Merrald on Blue Hors Zepter, 15-year-old Oldenbrg gelding, was awarded 80.430% for the top score on Denmark’s silver medal team.

The team results decided by the Grand Prix Thursday and the Special Saturday: 1. Germany 468.285; 2. Denmark 460.097; 3. Great Britain 459.756; 4. Netherlands 44.624; 5. Sweden 439.843; 6. France 434.843; 7. Spain 430.228; 8. United States of American 422.609.

Jessica, who caused a minor stir when she was seen wearing an ear plug during the ride that turned out to be only the cover, admitted she made two wrong decisions in the test, blaming herself. The collected walk was not well ridden and she waited too long after the first of two pirouettes before starting the line of nine changes.

“It’s not so easy when you try to be so light in the aids,” she said.

The ride by Charlotte Dujardin on Imhotep was one of the few in the rain, but it made no difference to the outcome in which they placed second individually.

Imhotep was competed by Charlotte on Britain’s team at the 2022 World Championships and has since gone on to score 80% at a CDI Grand Prix, the third horse to achieve that level. The other two were Valegro and Mount St. John Freestyle.

Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merrald described the performance on Blue Hors Zepter, 15-year-old Oldenburg gelding, as “the ride of my life.”

She disclosed that Zepter was to go to a young rider at Blue Hors after being competed by Daniel Bachmann Andersen. However, she said the young rider quit the stable so she ended up with the ride at the beginning of this year that is “getting better and better.”

One of the most anticipated rides was by Germany’s Sönke Rothenberger on the nine-year-old Fendi.

Preparation for the Grand Prix was “super” but he admitted to underestimating the atmosphere in the Deutsche Bank Stadium.

“It took 2 1/2 days in between (the Grand Prix and the Special) to give him security in the arena,” Sonke said. “That was my main goal, and I’m really happy with the confidence we could give him. This was the third Special [Fendi] has ever done, and I’m really happy with how well I could get him back on my side. I’m really proud of him.”

The United States team placed last in the Nations Cup and none of the four riders scored high enough to earn a start in the Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday.
