OCALA, Florida, May 26, 2023–Katherine Bateson Chandler competing Haute Couture in only the second international event in more than a year won the World Equestrian Center CDI3* Grand Prix Friday.

Katherine of Wellington, Florida and the 11-year-old KWPN mare were awarded 70.848% for the pair’s first win, the only one in the lineup of 18 combinations in the Grand Prix for the Special to score at least 70%.

The mare was acquired by Jennifer Huber and Katherine at the beginning of 2022. The horse was developed by Dinja van Liere and competed for the Netherlands including the 2021 European Championships.

“It’s a little bit a different style of riding,” Katherine said, “so I actually ended up going to Dinja for a couple of months in Europe because Dinja knows her well and she can translate for us until we start speaking the same language. Dinja is an incredible person and amazingly supportive. I’m very, very lucky to have an incredible team behind me.

We are strengthening our partnership, and it’s a trust thing, especially with a mare. She is scary intelligent. The things that she knows is amazing. I’m always playing to that, that I trust her and she knows what she’s doing and playing to her mental game. I was trying to be a little bit too much of her friend in the beginning because that’s my nature. I knew that I had to assert myself and tell her that I’m the human that’s in charge in a good way so that she trusts me as well. That was our learning curve, and I feel like we’re getting there.”

The only previous international competition for Katherine on Haute Couture was at Wellington’s Global Dressage Festival in March last year, but the pair has competed nationally.

Jan Ebeling on Jubi’s Tenacity, 13-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding, was runner-up on 69.935%.

Katie Duerrhammer on the 12-year-old Westfalen gelding Paxton were third on 69.109%.
