WERRIBEE, Australia, Mar. 24, 2023–Pauline Carnoval and Captain Cooks won the opening World Cup qualifier Friday, more than a year before the championship in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia April 16-20, 2024.
Pauline and the 16-year-old KWPN gelding were awarded 66.739% for the win that was the first in 13 starts since the pair’s first Big Tour more than four years ago.
Ten combinations, all Australians, started in the Grand Prix but only the top three achieved the mark of 65% required to move on to the Freestyle.
Michelle Baker and Bradgate Park Puccini, a 14-year-old Australian-bred warmblood, was second on 66.261%
Jessica Dertell on Syriana, the 17-year-old Westfalen mare previously competed by multi-Olympian Mary Hanna, was third on 65.632
The representative at the Final is determined by a Pacific League competition early next year, and not by points accumulated in qualifiers as occurs in Europe and North America.
