BONEO, Australia, Jan. 21, 2022–Six-time Olympian Mary Hanna on Syriana eked out a win Friday on identical scores over Jayden Brown and Senator Nymphgenburg making their Big Tour debut in the first-of-its kind CDI3* Grand Prix with all five judges Australians.
In the first international dressage event Down Under in two years, Mary and Syriana, a 16-year-old Westfalen mare, were awarded 71.022% in the first international competition for the pair since 2020.
Jayden and .Senator Nymphenburg, a 12-year-old Westfalen gelding received the same score in the first international competition for the partnership.
The panel of five judges–instead of two–from same nation was approved by the International Equestrian Federation because Australia’s coronavirus restrictions has prevented the presence of international judges. The goal was to give Australians the opportunity to seek the minimum required scores for the world championships in Herning, Denmark in August.
Three of the judges placed Mary, 67 years old, and Syriana first while two judges awarded the top spot to Jayden, 33, and Senator. Mary and Syriana had errors in the one-tempi changes, Jayden and Senator had mistakes in the two-tempis.
John Thompson, of New Zealand but based in Australia, rode Chemistry to a score of 69.957% for third place.
