BONEO, Australia, Jan. 22, 2022–Mary Hanna and Syriana slipped by John Thompson of New Zealand to post a last-minute win and the second victory in the one-time CDI3* Grand Prix Special with all Australian judges.
Mary competing at Big Tour for the first time since last summer’s Tokyo Olympics and the 16-year-old Westfalen mare scored 69.787%, just 0.149% ahead of the Australian-based New Zealander and the 10-year-old KWPN stallion as runner-up on 69.638% in their second Big Tour Special. Jayden Brown on Senator Nymphenburg who was a close second to Mary in the Grand Prix a day earlier placed third on 68.744%.
Mary, a six-time Olympian and the last to start in the class, recovered from a start that had her and Syriana around 62% to move into the lead and place atop the results as they did in the Grand Prix Friday.
The event was staged with approval of the International Equestrian Federation for the all-Australian judging panel instead of the maximum of two judges from the home nation to give Australian riders an opportunity to earn scores to qualify for the world championships in Herning, Denmark in August. Coronavirus restrictions have prevented international dressage events being staged Down Under for two years.
