Tryon Spring Dressage has been upgraded to a CDI4* April 22-25, the first competition at the level aside from the 2018 World Equestrian Games at the International Equestrian Center in North Carolina.
The upgrade to a CDI4* from CDI3* was posted on the official Tryon Internet page Friday and will be the first outside the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida in the past five years.
A 4* next week to wrap up the winter-long Global circuit on April 4 will be the second in Wellington this year, up from one most years as the number of World Cup qualifiers was reduced by a new system.
The Global circuit of seven CDIs including the only CDI5* and a Nations Cup in America is followed by the inaugural CDI, a 3*, at the newly opened World Equestrian Center in Ocala April 15-18, then Tryon the following week.
CDI4* events carry extra FEI ranking points and require higher ranked judges that can help combinations fulfill criteria for selection to Olympic and championship teams.
Tryon began hosting CDIs at 3* level with events in spring and fall in 2016 and 2017 with the World Games in 2018 in which Germany captured gold, the United States silver and Great Britain bronze.
Tryon will be only the 14th CDI4* ever in the Western Hemisphere since the first was staged by Athina Onassis in conjunction with a Global Champions Tour jumping competition in Rio de Janeiro in 2011.
Of the 12 CDI4* events held since then, all but three–West Palm Beach, Florida in 2012; Omaha, Nebraska in 2016 as preparation for the World Cup Final in 2017, and New York Central Park in 2016–have been staged at Wellington’s Global grounds.
