MADRID, Oct. 16, 2020–Beatriz Ferrer-Salat and Elegance won the Spanish Championship Grand Prix Friday in the first major competition for the four-time Olympian since breaking her hip in a horse accident in January. Juan Matute Guimon in his first competition since a life-saving brain operation five months ago rode Quantico to 13th place.

Beatriz, 54 years old, and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding (Negro x Monaco) scored 72.804% for the win. Beatriz has competed Elegance in international events since the horse was five and their only CDI Grand Prix was in April, 2019.

José Antonio García Mena on Sorento placed second on 72.761% with Jordi Domingo Coll on Dolman third on 71.326%.

The 22-year-old rider and Quantico that are the second highest ranked Spanish combination on the international standings, scored 66.717%.

Juan and the 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding were on Spain’s team at the 2018 World Equestrian Games to earn a start for the nation at the Tokyo Olympics. The pair last competed in February, three months before the rider collapsed with a genetic brain disorder.
