NEUMÜNSTER, Germany, Feb. 16, 2020–Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and TSF Dalera BB came within a whisker of 90% to capture the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday and beat reigning champion rider Isabell Werth posting a personal best score on Emilio.
Jessica and the 13-year-old Trakehner mare scored 89.640% for the victory, a personal best for the second day in a row and leading a German sweep of the top four places.
It was also the second highest result in the nine qualifiers in Western Europe leading to the Final in Las Vegas in two months–the highest was 90.280% for the three-time World Cup champion partnership of Isabell and Weihegold OLD at Amsterdam in January.
Isabell, riding Emilio as a backup to Weihegold, was awarded 88.450% for runner-up.
Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey FRH was third on 85.220% and Benjamin Werndl, Jessica’s brother, was fourth on Famoso with 85.065%, also a personal best.
Adelinde Cornelissen rode the 16-year-old Zephyr to a personal best 82.150% for fifth place and the first result above 80% for the pair.
“She’s a rock star, and the cutest horse in the world,” Jessica said after the ride. “She was amazing today. In piaffe and passage she was just breezing along, so I could breathe, relax and enjoy myself. There was such lightness, and it felt so easy and harmonious. I didn’t have to ask her for anything, all I had to do was just lead her through the test”
The win for Jessica and Dalera, ranked No. 5 in the world, consolidated her position atop the World Cup Western European League. She has said she does not plan to go to Las Vegas for the Final in mid-April but focus on selection for the Tokyo Olympics. The German Championships in Balve May 6-10 that are key to selection for the Olympic team are less than three weeks after the Las Vegas Final.
Though she indicated Sunday a possible change of heart and will decide next month whether to take Zaire-E to Las Vegas. Jessica has competed the 16-year-old KWPN mare in World Cup qualifiers this season.
Benjamin Werndl is ranked second and Helen Langehaenberg third. As title holder, Isabell is already qualified for a Final start with at least two series competitions on Weihegold and Emilio.
Jessica and Dalera were on the German gold medal team at the 2018 World Equestrian Games as well as at last September’s European Championship team where the pair also took Freestyle bronze.
In the past year, Jessica and Dalera have placed first over Isabell and Emilio in four Grand Prix Freestyles and once against Weihegold in all five head-to-head competitions. Against Bella Rose, however, the pair have placed third on the two occasions in which the world’s No. 1 combination was in the competition and placed first both times.
The next qualifier, the 10th of the 2019-2020 circuit, is scheduled for Gothenburg, Sweden later this week.
