HERNING, Denmark, Oct. 20, 2019–Cathrine Dufour and Bohemian captured the World Cup Grand Prix Freestyle with a personal best score Sunday to dominate the opening of the Western European circuit leading to the Final in Las Vegas next April.
Cathrine and the nine-year-old Westfalen gelding were awarded 88.190% that was within a hair of the rider’s career Big Tour best of 88.200% on her Olympic partner Cassidy.
Germany’s Benjamin Werndl on Daily Mirror placed second 84.545%, also a career Big Tour high and a day after posting a personal best 77.239% to place second in the Grand Prix. Benjamin and the 15-year-old Westfalen gelding competed at the rider’s first World Cup Final, in Gothenburg, Sweden last April.
Helen Langehanenberg and Damsey FRH, 17-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Louise Leatherdale of Long Lake, Minnesota and Susanne Meyer, were third on 83.360%. Helen was the 2013 World Cup champion on Damon Hill.
Severo Jurado Lopez on Fiontini, the Danish Warmblood mare that the Spaniard rode to world champion at five, six and seven years old, placed fourth on 83.320%.
Daniel Bachmann Andersen and Blue Hors Zack, team mates of Cathrine and Cassidy at the European Championships in Rotterdam two months ago that earned Denmark a start at next year’s Tokyo Olympics, was fifth on 80.485%
The result for the 27-year-old Cathrine who has never competed at a Final of the annual championship came a day after scoring 83.022% in the Grand Prix, only the fourth rider ever to breach 80% on more than one horse, the other being Cassidy. The three other riders are Isabell Werth on three horses–Bella Rose, Weihegold OLD and Emilio, all she is currently competing–Edward Gal on Totilas and Undercover and Charlotte Dujardin on Valegro and Mount St. John Freestyle.
“I am very, very happy and yesterday was truly amazing,” Cathrine said after the freestyle. “I have only done this freestyle three times, so I am just over the moon, and I think the sky is the limit for this horse.”
As for the future for Bohemian, “Of course, the marks are very nice, but I am very proud of the way he is developing. I am looking for him to stay in the same frame and be more secure in the arena. He felt way more safe and secure in the arena today.”
This was the first of 11 qualifiers in Western Europe that will allocate nine places of the total of 18 in the Final in Las Vegas. There will be a 10th, as Isabell Werth of Germany will be defending the title she has won the past three years.
The next West European qualifier is in Lyon, France later this week where Isabell is scheduled to compete. As the titleholder she needs only to compete twice on the horse for the Final where she will be looking to win her sixth championship in the 33rd year of the annual World Cup for individual honors.
The crowd at Herning gave an emotional farewell to Jojo AZ, the 16-year old Hungarian gelding that Agnete Kirk Thinggaard rode on the Danish team at the 2016 Olympics, the 2013, 2017 and 2019 European Championships as well as the 2015 and 2016 World Cup Finals. The pair were awarded 77.630% in the freestyle and 72.609% in the Grand Prix Saturday.
Agnete, who works with Florida-based Lars Petersen, a Danish Olympian who now rides under the United States flag, will compete several horses at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington over the winter.
Although Cathrine claimed the 20 points for the victory, several West European riders competed in Central Europe ahead of time to earn points and get a head start in the campaign for Las Vegas.
