LIMA, Peru, July 28, 2019–Sarah Lockman on First Apple produced a personal best Prix St. Georges score to top the first day of Pan American Games team competition Sunday with the United States and Canada locked in a neck-and-neck tussle for gold while Brazil was standing third in a bid to join the Canadians in filling the two 2020 Olympic starting places available. The USA has already booked a ticket to Tokyo with its World Equestrian Games team silver medal.
After the first day of Prix St. Georges/Grand Prix competition, standings were: 1. USA 219.970; 2. Canada 219.828; 3. Brazil 204.472; 4. Mexico 202.246; 5. Colombia 198.117; 6. Peru 188.677; Argentina ELIM; Chile ELIM.
The team medals will be decided after the Intermediate 1 and Grand Prix Special competitions Monday.
Canada seems assured of one of the starting places in Tokyo a year from now, while Brazil is ahead of Mexico for the second Olympic spot.
Sarah and the nine-year-old KWPN that became the dominant U.S. Small Tour partnership after just two CDI events in California scored 76.088%. The two other American combinations of Jennifer Baumert on Handsome scored 72.441% and Nora Batchelder on Faro SQF was awarded 71.441%.
The Dutta Corp. USA team was reduced to only three Small Tour combinations seeking to claim its sixth straight Pan Am Games gold when Endel Ots’ mount Lucky Strike was injured while being transported to Miami for the flight to Lima.
Until Sarah and First Apple, the two Canadian Small Tour pairs of Tina Irwin on Laurencio with 73.735% and Lindsay Kellock on Floratina with 73.180% had set up the two Big Tour combinations of Jill Irving on Degas and Naima Moreira-Laliberté on Statesman to consolidate the team’s contention for the lead.
Naima and Statesman scored 71.413% that with the bonus 1.5% for Grand Prix combinations pushed their total to 72.913%. Jill and Degas were at 68.391% and with the bonus Big Tour mark did not count for the team total.
