HERNING, Denmark, Oct. 21, 2018–Hometown favorite Daniel Bachmann Andersen rode Blue Hors Zack to victory in the opening round of the World Cup Western European League Grand Prix Freestyle Sunday, posting a personal best score for the biggest win for the Danish team partnership in 18 months at Big Tour.
Daniel and the 14-year-old KWPN stallion scored 83.375 per cent for the win over German Olympian and 2013 World Cup champion rider Helen Langehanenberg on Damsey FRH at 81.405 per cent in the first of 10 indoor competitions in Western Europe to qualify for the final in Gothenburg, Sweden next April.
Sweden’s seven-time Olympian Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén and Don Auriello, a partnership of two Olympics, two World Equestrian Games and World Cup reserve champion in 2016, placed third on 80.900 per cent.
Kristy Oatley on du Soleil was fourth on 78.130 per cent, a new Australian Grand Prix Freestyle record that broke the previous record of 77.650 per cent that the Germany-based rider set on Quando Quando in Braunschweig, Germany more than 10 years ago.
The win by Daniel and Zack was only the third for the Danish combination in 18 months at Big Tour and came after competing at the Tryon World Games last month.
“I felt I had a chance to win today but I knew I had to be humble,” he said. “Helen and Tinne could also do good so I had to ride really well–I took my chance and I rode my chance.”
Zack is also special because he’s blind in one eye.
“There were a few issues to work on and a lot of bumps along the way, and he was actually 12 years old when he made his debut at this level of of the sport but he just got better and better from show to show after that,” Daniel said.
“He’s also a breeding stallion and he’s not just my horse, he’s my friend and my partner, he’s everything to me. He was given up a bit by other riders who had him before, he wasn’t easy because he’s very sensitive, so I had to get into his heart and get him to trust me. Now what we have is very special.”
Daniel won the CDI3* Grand Prix Special on Blue Hors Don Olymbrio here on Saturday.
He is coached by Lars Petersen, the Florida-based Danish Olympian who became an American citizen and has opted to ride for the United States.
Nine Western European riders get to qualify for the annual championship based on the musical performance, plus the defending champion that is German superstar Isabell Werth who took the title on Weihegold OLD in 2017 and 2018.
North America and Central Europe each get to send two horses and riders, the Pacific Asia league one as well as three others .
Next in the western European lineup is Lyon, France Nov. 1-2.
