TRYON, North Carolina, Sept. 14, 2018–Isabell Werth of Germany and Bella Rose won the World Equestrian Games individual gold medal with 86.246%, Laura Graves of the United States and Verdades silver, 81.717%, and Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain bronze, 81.489%.

The second gold medal for superstar Isabell on Bella Rose at these Games was remarkable for the comback for the 14-year-old Westfalen mare who led Germany to team gold at the WEG in Normandy four years ago then a persistent injury kept the horse out of competition until two months ago.

For Laura, this was the first WEG individual silver for an American rider and goes with the team silver the United States won Thursday. Steffen Peters on Ravel won two individual bronze medals at the 2010 WEG in Kentucky.

Isabell and Bella Rose were the last of 29 combinations to start in the Grand Prix Special, and came after Laura and her 16-year-old KWPN gelding had gone to the top of the leaderboard with a score of 81.717 per cent, Charlotte Dujardin on the nine-year-old Mount St. John Freestyle and successor to Valegro on 81.489 per cent and team mate Sönke Rothenberger on Cosmo on 81.277 per cent.

At these world championships that so far have seen possibly two days of the greatest competitive dressage sport, Isabell said of her feelings when she rode into the arena, “You can imagine I had three other riders with 81 per cent already. I knew we had to do our best to get the gold medal.

“From start she was full of power when she started the first extended trot and I thought,” Isabell said, “‘Wow! She’s ready to go.”

“She goes so easy and that makes her so special. It makes a rider really happy to have such a horse.”

“I felt so safe on her and so happy the whole time. She had so much energy and was so patient and ready to present herself. The horse is so good it is up to you to see if you can ride her to show it.”

Isabell said that Madeleine Winter-Schulze, the owner of Bella Rose, was in the hospital in nearby Spartanburg, South Carolina where she underwent an operation on her leg which was injured in the stables Thursday.

“I told her I will try my best to bring her a gold medal and glass of Champagne,” she said. “I need to go down there to give her the medal and drink some Champagne.”

Laura Graves whose first international championship with Verdades was at the WEG four years ago said of her ride: “I think when you’re looking at scores this high you’re looking at a test that is pretty flawless. In this heat, it’s really a test of a horse’s character and my horse did this today.”

Riding Verdades was not the phyiscal effort because he knows his job, “for me it’s always a matter his mind. It’s always different.”

Verdades that she has brought up from a foal has trotted into the arena by himself for both competitions–“he knows he’s got a bunch of fans and is ready to show off.”

Mount St. John Freestyle that Charlotte rode to bronze lived up to the buzz that surrounded the nine-year-old Hanoverian mare that has competed in four shows and two Grand Prix Specials since starting Big Tour five months ago.
“Unbelievable,” she said, “I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
When she rode into the arena, she said, “I felt I was the jam in a sandwich between Sönke (Rothenberger) and Isabell so I have to come out a look like I know what I’m doing.”

“Yesterday we rode a little bit safe. It was an easy ride. I thought I’d go for a bit more today. Honestly, I felt I had nothing to lose.

“She upped her game, took the challege on. She is such a fighter, and just delivered.”

For me personally there were no lows. I cannot ask anything more from her.
“Next year when she’s stronger and confident we’re going to give Isabell a run for the money.”
