ERMELO, Netherlands, Aug. 3, 2018–There were at least eight horses returning to the World Breeding Championships for six-year-old horses from success in the five-year-old division in 2017. Five of the top six placings from 2017 were competing Friday.
This should have made for an exciting, thrilling and quality class.
The reality was otherwise.
The winner was the Rhinlander stallion Villeneuve (Vitalis x Dancier). Ridden for Germany by Laura Strobel to the overall score of 8.86. This combination had one of the best canters, with a score of 9.0. This was one of only eight 9-plus scores given through the entirety of the class of 40 horses.
In second place was the popular Dutch combination of Henkie (Alexandro x Upperville) and Adelinde Cornelissen.
Henkie finished 6th in the finals of the five-year-old division in 2017. Friday, he posted an overall score of 8.76 with the trot being the highlight, the highest trot score of the day on 9.2.
