SEGOVIA, Spain, May 13, 2018–Juan Matute, Jr. and Quantico Ymas won the CDI3* Grand Prix Special Sunday for the first Big Tour victory in Europe for the 20-year-old college student campaigning to be on Spain’s team for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon.

Juan, based in Florida with his family for more than a decade, and the 12-year-old German-bred gelding scored 71.149 per cent for the win. The pair placed third in the Grand Prix Friday in the first of three selection events to decide the Spanish team for the WEG in Tryon, North Carolina in four months.

Juan and Don Diego Ymas were second in the Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night, behind Claudio Castilla Ruiz and Alcaide.

José Antonio Garcia Mena, who rode for Spain in the 2010 and 2014 World Games, placed second on Benzo Landro, in the Special on a score of 71.000 per cent.

Juan and Quantico competed successfully in the Under-25 division, placing third in the European U-25 Championship Grand Prix last September, a week after sweeping an international invitational staged during the senior European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The duo won the CDI4* Grand Prix at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida in March, 2017.

Juan, along with his parents and sister, became an American citizen earlier this year though he intends to continue competing for Spain for now.

For the first time, he will spend most of the year in Europe instead of Florida to advance his equestrian career while continuing online college.
