HERNING, Denmark, Oct. 21, 2017–Cathrine Dufour and Cassidy, on Denmark’s team at the 2016 Olympics and her nation’s star at the European Championships, won the World Cup Grand Prix Saturday with a personal best score made up of at least 80 per cent by all but one judge who marked the pair down to fourth place.
Cathrine and the 14-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding that she has partnered from a youngster to top sport scored 79.840 per cent, with four of the five judges placing the pair first with scores of at least 80 per cent. The duo was awarded one mark of 10, for a flying change.
Except for Gotthilf Riexinger of Germany who awarded the duo 74.600 per cent and placed them fourth, choosing to assign first place to German superstar Isabell Werth on Don Johnson though the score was about the same as the other judges.
Nevertheless, the crowd gave Cathrine a standing ovation even though Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on Zaire-E was still to go in the first event in the World Cup Western European League. The winter-long indoor circuit will determine the Western European lineup for the World Cup Final in Paris next April.
Isabell, the most decorated Olympic equestrian in history and competing here at the start of her campaign to defend the title she won in Omaha this year, placed second on 77.400 per cent on Don Johnson, on which she is ranked No. 6 in the world behind her other mounts, Weihegold OLD at No. 1 and Emilio at No. 4.
Sweden’s Patrik Kittel on Delaunay OLD was third on 74.940 per cent.
Cathrine and Cassidy, ranked seventh in the world, led her team to the bronze medal and earned two individual bronzes at the European Championships two months ago.
She made it clear beforehand she will not campaign Cassidy across Europe for a start in the World Cup but wanted to perform at this event for her homeland.
The Grand Prix Freestyle that for which points will be awarded toward qualifying for the final is scheduled for Sunday.
Denmark’s Olympic rider Anna Kasprzak and Rock Star posted a personal best score of 70.900 per cent to win the CDI2* Grand Prix.
The victory for Anna and the nine-year-old Westfalen gelding was their first in five starts since beginning international Grand Prix six months ago.
Germany’s Janina Siemers on Scaramouche placed second on 69.160 per cent and Daniel Bach Andersen of Denmark on Blue Hors Zepter was third on 68.120 per cent.
