WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2017–Martin Richenhagen, a German-American business leader and long time sponsor of equestrian sports in his native Germany and the United States, has been awarded the prestigious German Federal Service Cross 1st class, a top honor.
The award was made on behalf of Germany’s president by Dr. Peter Wittig at a reception and dinner at the German embassy in Washington who described Martin as “an American dream… come true–from horse trainer to top manager in the USA; a story of courage, will and passion of a man.”
Martin was instrumental in combining German-American Chambers of Commerce in Chicago, Atlanta and New York to form a German-American foreign trade chamber. As chairman of this chamber, he was for many years the voice and face of German-American economic relations. Since 2004, he has been chairman and chief executive officer of the U.S. agricultural equipment group AGCO with 20,000 employees and annual revenues of US$8.5 billion.
Martin, who is a dressage judge and breeds horses on his farm in Atlanta, was chef d’equipe of the German dressage team at the 2008 Olympics. Fendt, a German tractor manufacturer owned by AGCO, is a major team sponsor of the German Equestrian Federation.
AGCO is also a sponsor of the U.S. Equestrian Federation.
